10 Forgotten RPG Series You Need To Play

Spread the love

Do you remember Golden Sun and these other RPG titles that have been forgotten?

Most people probably think of Final Fantasy or Mass Effect when they think of their favorite role-playing games. Since RPGs have some of the best stories ever told, it makes sense that only a few of them could stand out and become hit series. Sometimes an RPG series becomes a fan favorite, but as the generations of game consoles change, the series just gets left behind.

Some fans or developers may forget about a series, but for diehard RPG fans, even old RPGs will never really die.

Hydlide

Hydlide

A lot of people on the internet have said horrible things about the Hydlide games, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t people who liked them. In the mostly forgotten RPG series, you played as a knight in a story that was pretty typical for RPGs.

Most people have forgotten about the series because it hasn’t come out in years and didn’t do much that was different from other games in its genre. When you look at the original NES game, which was kind of clunky, it’s easy to see why most of you would have chosen Final Fantasy instead.

Wizardry

Wizardry

Since the Wizardry series is a big part of why modern RPGs are so popular, it’s a little strange that almost no one ever talks about it. The first game came out in 1981, and the last one in the series was released in 2001.

Since the games were mostly played on older computers for decades, it’s possible that most people have forgotten about them. Wizardry probably won’t get any bigger than a minor spin-off series for the foreseeable future, since it’s hard to compete with the big fantasy RPGs of today.

Ultima

Ultima

Ultima was a very important series for early RPGs, just like Slope Game (and even later, online games). The games were so popular that there are now nine of them in a series. The stories in the games range from simple to shockingly complicated.

The story of the games is broken up into three main chunks, and each chunk is made up of three games. It was a big idea for a series that started in the 1980s. The series ended quietly in the late 1990s, though this could have been because sales kept going down.

Breath Of Fire

Breath Of Fire

People have different ideas about whether or not the Breath of Fire series has been completely forgotten, but when the last full game in the series was turned into a mobile game in 2016, some would say the series is mostly over.

When it came out in 1994 for the Super Nintendo in North America, the Breath of Fire series surprised a lot of people with how mature the overall story was. Breath of Fire 3 on the PSP was the last mainline game to come out on a serious console, even though it was a handheld.

Golden Sun

Golden Sun

There aren’t many people who liked the RPGs on the Game Boy Advance who didn’t also like playing Golden Sun. As you move through the series, you deal with the threat of alchemy and learn more about it.

The Golden Sun series was one of the best RPGs that could only be played on a handheld device. From 2001 to 2010, there were only three mainline games in the series, and the last one came out for the Nintendo DS. Most people have forgotten about it, but if enough fans push for it, maybe a new entry will show up in the future.

Lufia

Lufia

The Lufia series seems like it was always going to be compared to well-known series like Final Fantasy. The problem is that Lufia never did anything new or different that made it stand out in the minds of fans.

Sinistrals are the forces of evil, and a group of heroes fights to stop them from rising. The last game was a remake of the second game for the Nintendo DS in 2010. Since then, there haven’t been any more games in the series. There’s always a chance it could come back to life, but it would have to make a big change.

King’s Field

King’s Field

Most people don’t know about the King’s Field series of role-playing games, but you can thank these games for Dark Souls. The games weren’t always as hard as Dark Souls, but they were made by FromSoftware and were released before Dark Souls.

It was one of the first 3D first-person games, but even though it was one of the first of its kind, the series didn’t last long. The last game in the mainline series came out in 2001, and FromSoftware is very busy right now, so King’s Field is likely to be left behind.

Might And Magic

Might And Magic

Might and Magic did try to start over in 2014, but since there haven’t been any more games in the series since then, you can guess how that went. Surprisingly, the 10-game series began all the way back in 1986.

Even though the games look like standard RPGs at first glance, many of them have unique storylines and can be played a surprising number of times even today. The series was a big hit when it first came out, but you’d be hard-pressed to find more than a few gamers today who have heard of it.

Grandia

Grandia

Almost every RPG that came out around the same time as Final Fantasy 7 was doomed from the start. That’s more or less what happened to Grandia, and even though everyone who played any of the games liked them, the series mostly stopped being made.

Since 1997, there have been mainline games in the series, and Grandia 3 came out in 2005/2006. Since then, the biggest fans of the series have been able to get an HD collection of the games, but that’s not the same as a new game or even more attention.

Suikoden

Suikoden

It’s hard to believe that there hasn’t been a mainline Suikoden game since 2006. The games are known for having criminally underrated stories and a huge number of party members that can be played.

Some people might not have liked the series at first because of the art style, which is a shame because the stories are some of the most in-depth looks at political corruption and revolution in the genre. Who can say? Maybe one day the first two RPG games will be updated, but that might just be a wishful thought.
